Taking Flight is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation committed to increasing the number of Toastmasters clubs in prison facilities. Statistics indicate that 50-70% of all released inmates return to prison, compared to 10% for inmates who have participated in a prison Toastmasters program. These clubs help inmates develop skills in social interactions so that inmates are more likely to fit in with society when they are released and less likely to return to prison.
Toastmasters clubs is a product of Toastmasters International - a world leader in developing people’s speaking, listening, and leadership skills. Approximately 1% of all Toastmasters clubs serve prison populations.
Taking Flight works through remote Satellite organizations made up of local Toastmasters clubs (occasionally assisted by various church and civic organizations). Taking Flight provides expertise in starting and sustaining clubs, limited financial assistance, and access to prison officials. The Satellite then works with its local prison officials to form and sustain the prison club.
